The Lunar Chronicles, by Marissa Meyer is the first futuristic series I'd ever read. It was also the first space-themed series, and it totally set the bar high. I mean, futuristic fairytale re-tellings of my favourite princesses', surrounded by some of the greatest, strongest characters you could imagine? (plus tons of cute romance) Can it get any better than that? (And I still haven't even mentioned the best book covers of all time!)
